JOBS AND THE ECONOMY

As your representative, my number one priority will be to implement policies that will encourage job creation in Iowa. I support the continued development of green jobs, including jobs in construction, manufacturing, and agriculture. Wind energy, biodiesel, and ethanol production are areas worth exploring and providing continued investment. I also support health insurance reform that will reduce costs, so businesses can afford to provide health insurance to all employees.

EDUCATION

Receiving a top-rate education is the key to success. As your state representative, I want to improve educational quality for all children and ensure students stay connected to schools and achieve their full potential. Adequate funding for early childhood education programs, including Early ACCESS, Head Start, and preschool, is essential to ensuring that all children start off on the right path. Creating alternative educational programs and decreasing truancy are needed to increase graduation rates.  While I was a volleyball coach at West High, I had the privilege to work with dedicated, caring teachers, all of whom deserve to be treated as the professionals they are and deserve to be provided with the necessary training and resources to meet the increased demands of providing a high quality education.

WORKERS

I was a member of AFSCME while employed with Woodbury County and support the right of workers to bargain collectively. Providing a living wage to workers is not a burden on business. It should be a goal that we all seek. Don’t we want all Iowans to have sufficient income to raise their families and support the local economy? Public contracts should require prevailing wage to reflect local wage conditions. Workers injured on the job should have the ability to choose their own doctors. As your representative, I will work to improve health insurance quality and reduce health insurance costs so health care is more accessible and affordable for all workers and their children.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

I recently started my own business. Paying the bills as they are due is a must for my business and for your own families. We cannot pass on debt to our children and grandchildren. As your representative, I will work to balance the state budget and prevent tax increases on working families and small businesses. I will work to help Iowa businesses grow and create high-paying jobs that will ensure adequate revenues for government responsibilities.
